Although its tempting to think all zebras look alike, each has a unique pattern of stripes, and zebras use these patterns to tell one another apart. Naturalists think the stripes confuse predators, a necessity in the zebras African grassland home, where lions and hyenas prowl.

History: All three types of zebras are native to Africa, where they live in the east and south. Although they reside mostly in grasslands, some zebras make their homes in woodlands or even mountains. Related to horses and donkeys, zebras live in family groups of a male, several females, and offspring, but family groups often combine into massive herds for protection.

Scientific Name: Equus quagga

Characteristics: Liven up an Africa project or use these zebras as classroom giveaways or party favors. They make great cupcake toppers too.

Size: White with black stripes, or maybe black with white stripes, these paperclip length zebras (about 1 inch long) are full of fun.
